I am Mog Anarchy, and I like to play games. Whether they are old, new, retro, modern, online, offline, console, computer, critically acclaimed or notoriously bad. Here on my blog, I rant about, review, trash talk, praise and generally talk about all of my favourite and least-favourite games. I also write my own guides on how to accomplish tricky tasks, show off my creative endeavors and challenge myself with crazy in-game tasks. I also have a bunch of gaming merchandise which I am glad to show off. So drop me a comment, I love hearing your questions, criticisms, comments and general gaming discussions. :)

Review: Costume Quest

It's Hallowe'en! Time to wrap up your children in black bin bags, toilet roll tubes and tin foil and send them off into the pitch darkness to visit the homes of complete strangers and beg for candy! While they're out getting molested by clowns hiding in the bushes and ingesting class A drugs that were carefully disguised - you can stay home, lock the door and eat all the candy you bought for the kids while you enjoy a suitably seasonal themed gaming session.

Costume Quest is a 2010 game developed by Double Fine Productions, released on PC, the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network. Set in and around a suburb and a shopping mall at Hallowe'en, you assume the role of either Reynold or Wren, one of a set of fraternal twins and a group of their misfit friends all clad in homemade Hallowe'en costumes. The game is a mixture of sandbox exploration and RPG - quests and side quests mixed in with random battles and scripted boss fights - in both of which the Hallowe'en costumes play a role.

The town has been overtaken  by Dorsilla the Witch and the Grubbins - a group of green-skinned ogres who are hell bent on enslaving the trick-or-treating children and stealing their candy hauls. The children aim to put a stop to their plans by capturing all of the candy for themselves - by trick-or-treating all of the local homes and shops and collecting new costumes, items and battle stamps to defeat the area bosses.

Like most RPGs, there are a host of collectible items and sidequests to fill out your journal with - these include collecting trading cards of bizarre candies and treats (and trading your doubles with NPCs to acquire rare ones), battle stamps, which provide new skills and abilities in battle and secret costumes, which provide new abilities in both the field and during battle.

Naturally, as it's Hallowe'en - there will be plenty of tricks to go along with your treats and plenty of fun themed challenges and sidequests to compete in - such as best costume competition, bobbing for apples, hide and seek and gatecrashing private parties in costumed disguise.

The game’s currency is candy - which is obviously stored in your characters’ trick or treat pails - which can be upgraded over time to larger ones with bigger capacities. Candy can be earned from winning battles, completing side quests, trick or treating at the correct houses or can just be picked up off the ground or found inside breakable objects.

The game is family friendly and has simple controls and limited options in battle to be accessible to younger players - but also includes several more high-brow jokes and references that only adults would understand, in addition to optional battles and tasks that are more difficult.

Each costume provides different effects in battle and in the field - the battle effects will be categorised as melee (large damage dealing attacks), defense (defensive spells), special (spells with unique effects) and support (healing spells). The field effects include shields to pass through areas with falling rocks, roller skates to jump ramps into new areas and a light up sword to illuminate dark sections.

Instead of relying on complicated stats, weapons and armor like a traditional RPG, Costume Quest relies solely on your experience and level and matching different costume abilities to certain battle situations. This also makes the game simpler for children but still retains somewhat of a challenge for the more obtuse bosses and their awkward attacks. Both attacking and defending involve matching a button sequence or quick time event too - instead of the standard turn-based trope of sitting around and waiting. This makes the relatively short battles more involved and fun.

In addition to the main storyline, there is a DLC world, Grubbins on Ice which turns the story on its head and allows the children to join forces with the Grubbins to defeat Araxia and Big Bones - who have kidnapped your friend Lucy. This DLC continues on from your main story progress and you retain your previous levels, costumes, battle stamps etc but also provides you with the opportunity to unlock DLC specific costumes and items as well as raise your levels to match the new higher levelled enemies and bosses.

My main complaint with Costume Quest is its length. It's far too short! I enjoyed a good 6-8 hours of the main quest and DLC and was sadly left wanting more. It's like I'd only been given fun size Milky Ways in my trick or treat bag from the grouchy old man across the street, knowing full well he had king sized ones in his pantry. I would have loved some post-game sidequests, another DLC world or the opportunity for a new game plus with stronger enemies - after I'd collected literally every item in the game, completed all of the sidequests and maxed out all of my characters - I was still hungry, damn it! I have a massive sweet tooth for RPGs, after all.

So if you're looking for a fun little game this Hallowe'en and are tired of the predictable jump scares of horror games or the absurd plot twists of the psychological thriller games - or if you're looking for a family friendly title you can play with your kids, I recommend Costume Quest wholeheartedly. But I can't promise you won’t be left craving something a bit more after you've finished chowing down...

Review: Dead Block

Are you like me? Are you tired of the unrealistic zombie apocalypse survival games that allow you to subsist totally on coffee creamer and mow down thousands of zombies with a chainsaw? Fed up of the ridiculous implausible cast of characters like office workers, children and overweight middle aged men? Bored of the sheer nonsensical storylines involving viruses and infections that somehow escape containment at top secret labs?

Well it's time to put an end to all of these zombie survival game tropes once and for all! Behold, Dead Block!
A zombie survival game set in the 1950s that allows you to build explosive door traps from broken shelves and nuts…? An all new all-star cast of a construction worker… a boy scout and a sexy police officer…? A zombie invasion that was caused by the sheer unholy abomination sweeping across America known as ROCK N ROLL MUSIC?! ...Oh for fuck’s sake. It's hopeless isn't it? Zombie apocalypse games are as realistic as unicorns and living comfortably on minimum wage.

So… While we're here… Dead Block is a 2011 arcade-style safehouse defense game by Candygun Games - released on the Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Microsoft Windows.

You assume the role of one of three playable characters, Jack Foster, a construction worker sporting a handlebar moustache, Mike Bacon, a resourceful boy scout and Foxy Jones, a police officer with an impressive afro and mini skirt. Some levels require you alternate control between two or all of the characters whilst allowing the CPU to control the inactive characters. There is also a split-screen co-op mode that supports up to 4 local players, but unfortunately doesn't include any online modes.

The game is broken up into different levels based around classic Americana - such as garages, diners, high schools and motels - you are then faced with the task of barricading yourself in safely by blocking up the doors and windows and setting traps to immobilise or kill any zombies who manage to creep through. You gather the main resources, wood and nuts by smashing up objects such as shelves, beds and tables and rummaging through toolboxes, cupboards and piggy banks. Wood is used to construct barricades and nuts are used to set traps.

Jack, Foxy and Mike can all build barricades but all come equipped with their own unique traps, weapons and skills. For example, Jack can smash items the fastest and build the strongest barricades. Mike can search objects the fastest and build the deadliest and most innovative traps. Foxy is the best at hand-to-hand combat and can later utilise weapons from her police arsenal like tasers and shotguns.

You can also electrocute zombies by placing a piece of meat to lure them over to a heating unit. Fixing broken TVs will distract zombies and gather them in a single area as they are dazzled by the flashing lights. Any coins you find can be used in the vending machines to refill your health with Fatty Cola or used in the jukebox for a special attack that causes all on-screen zombies to rock out and dance until they die, literally.

The primary objective of each area is to find a guitar, amplifier and effects deck that will set the stage for you to blast out an electric solo that kills all of the zombies infesting the area. Other levels will also require you to rescue your friends who are held captive somewhere within the level or kill a set number of zombies. There are also optional medals to be earned - which involve smashing a set amount of objects, killing enough zombies and ensuring you and your partners don't get eaten. Your high scores and clear times can also be uploaded to the respective format’s leaderboards for bragging rights.

Both the single player and co-op modes feature their own unique bunch of levels and there is even a DLC level pack - More Dead To Block that comes with more. You can play on either easy, medium or hard - and you're encouraged to work your way up to hard, as that's the only way to earn the elusive gold medals!

As you progress through the game you will also be able to find stronger weapons for your characters, more complicated trap schematics and upgrades to their special ability. For example, Mike Bacon can throw out a tasty cheeseburger to distract zombies. This can later be upgraded to a brain burger with cheese that attracts more zombies and eventually into a brain burger stuffed with dynamite - which makes short work of the greedy horde.

The main problem with Dead Block is that it's very repetitive. Whether you're in a diner, a high school or a Turkish bath house - you'll always be running around smashing the same objects, building the same traps and jamming out the same guitar solos. Personally I don't mind repetitive gameplay as long as it's fun - some players may only be able to play a level or two before getting bored. Few people are dedicated enough, like me, to play the game for 6 hours solid and then wonder what happened to your evening.

The lack of online multiplayer modes was also quite disappointing - as I liked playing it locally with a friend but naturally was annoyed after a while by only being to play on half of my screen. He went home and promptly downloaded the game - only for us to be frantically searching for the online mode and being unable to find one.

However I do feel that the art style is colourful and unique, some of the wacky traps were genuinely entertaining - especially mounting the blocked toilets above the corridor doors and dousing the horde with sewage - and the characters were all different and likeable, compared to the usual slew of military men and elite law enforcement personnel. The concept of rock n roll music raising the dead and simultaneously being used as a weapon against them may be unrealistic, but it's more entertaining than throwing a grenade or mowing down a horde in a monster truck.

So I recommend Dead Block to anybody who is a fan of arcade-style level based gameplay, can think strategically and is bored of the usual zombie game tropes and is looking for something *ever so slightly* different…

The Walking Dead Season 2: My Episode 5 Choices!

----------------------------------------------
Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

Now I've finished the last episode (I assume; unless they bring out a DLC like 400 Days), I can safely say that season 2 is not as good as season 1.

But as with a lot of games, it can be hard to live up to a Game Of The Year. With the exception of Oblivion and Skyrim, I can't think of any game that's managed to surpass itself after being GOTY. (Behold, three more examples of where this has happened:)
This is a screenshot of my results from Episode 5:
Fucking whoa, I've never seen a divide as big as that one before. I'm assuming it's because I played it only a few days after it came out, so less players are factoring in. I'm in the minority for 4/5 choices here - BADASS Clementine kicks ass. :)

Went for cover: Yeah, fuck the baby, it's all about me. I wasn't risking my arse to save the useless pile of puke.

Tried to help Luke: After Jane, Luke was my favourite, and I hoped that I could have saved him. But obviously, I couldn't. :(

Wanted to leave with Mike: I picked this option just to see if I could actually go through with it - and I wouldn't have minded as much, I could have left Kenny and the filthy baby to freeze to death.

Shot Kenny: FUCK YES. FUCK YES. FUCK YES.
I'd been waiting for this opportunity for like 6 fucking hours! Killing him felt better than killing Duck AND Larry combined in season 1!

Sided with Jane: Yeah, fuck those strangers. Jane taught me to look out for number one - and I wasn't risking meeting MORE arseholes. For those of you who didn't pick this option - it's quite possibly the best BADASS Clementine moment in the game. :)

So, until next time - if they bring out any more DLC episodes or a season 3. (I'm doubting it though...)

The Walking Dead Season 2: My Episode 4 Choices!

----------------------------------------------
Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

HERE COMES SPOILERS:

Oh Christ; this episode had so much fucking baby bullshit in it... If there's one thing I hate more than kids, it's fucking babies. Although I was friendly with Rebecca, I tried to make excuses about the baby, rather than being an outright cock. But for fuck's sake, Kenny is getting more on my tits than usual - why is he so fucking posessive over this ugly baby? It's NOT his!! I hope the fucking baby dies and Kenny shoots himself out of depression. ¬_¬

This is a screenshot of my results from Episode 4:
I'm in the majority for 3/5 choices this time... Hrmmm....

Saved Sarah: Special Sarah doesn't deserve to die, she's never wronged me before... Though, if she'd declined my offer one too many times, I may have felt inclined to leave her behind to get eaten.

Stole pills: I could tell right from the start that Arvo was a cock; and besides, a woman giving birth is someone who needs pills more than some woman who whinges. (That's the impression I got of his sister, anyway.)

Volunteered to crawl through: I didn't actually think this was a choice; but I'd given in to the requests of the less arsey characters before. I love how Clementine is so sarcastic now. It's fucking awesome. :)

Held the baby: I actually tried to avoid this, by saying "I don't know how" - but she still ending up holding the disgusting pile of puke. On a related note, where the hell are they getting nappies from? Or is that baby blanket just saturated in piss and baby shit?

Shot Rebecca: This happened too fucking quick for me to even take in - I was just like: FUCKING WHAAAAT - then Kenny did it. After I realised what happened, I was quite disappointed that zombie Rebecca didn't EAT THE BABY. Why didn't she EAT THE BABY? It would have been piss funny if she had EATEN THE BABY. :(

Although it wasn't a choice; I chose Jane over Sarah when the deck collapsed. It was a choice between my two (alive) favourites, and Jane is clearly far more fucking useful than Special Sarah. Then the ungrateful bitch decided to leave! COWBAG!

The last episode, episode 5 will be up soon. :)

The Walking Dead Season 2: My Episode 3 Choices!

----------------------------------------------
Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

HERE BE SPOILERS.

Unlike Season 1, I've found myself taking the silent option a hell of a lot. (The "...." speech choice, or Y on the Xbox 360.) Mainly because I found myself not agreeing with any of the other choices - namely when I didn't want to agree with fuckhole Kenny or upset any of the characters I actually like.

Special Sarah is starting to grate on me a little... However, I have a definate favourite character now: Jane. She reminds me a little of Molly from Season 1, but even more fucking hardcore. I hope we get to be BADASSES together. :)

This is a screenshot of my results from Episode 3:
Grrr. Majority rules. I seem to be in the higher percentage for 5/5 choices here...

Helped Sarah: Special Sarah is really starting to annoy me; however I did feel sorry for her after Carlos slapped the shit out of her. And anyway, I'm BADASS Clementine, I don't care what people say to me for not doing my work.

Told Bonnie about Luke: I was so pleased to see the return of some of the characters from 400 Days - namely Bonnie, because she was my favourite of the lot, and easily the least arseholey one. I forgave her for being a sneaky, Southern ginger bitch and decided to tell her the truth.

Tried to hide the theft: BADASS Clementine time again here. I hoped I could get away with it. (On a somewhat related note, I stole the gold watch in episode 1, but haven't found a single choice that's related to it in any way...)

Watched Kenny kill Carver: As much as I fucking hate Kenny, I hated Carver too. Besides, I like me some gore - and so does BADASS Clementine.

Chopped off Sarita's arm: There was two trains of thought to this one - firstly, Reggie's story proved that if you cut off a bitten arm fast enough, you can survive. But on the other hand, I wanted to upset Kenny - which it certainly fucking did. Unfortunately Clementine broke her BADASS persona I'd been building and pulled out her old stupid sad face that she did all the time in Season 1...

Episode 4 is on its way... :)

The Walking Dead Season 2: My Episode 2 Choices!

Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

Time for episode 2. SPOILERS INCOMING.

For FUCK'S SAKE. Why did they bring back HIM?! HE was clearly my least favourite character in season 1 - even more so than fucking Larry and Lily! There is NO way that BADASS Clementine is ever going to agree to his retarded plans or even be civil to him in any way. Fuck me, I am waiting with baited breath for ANY opportunity to fucking kill him!

On a lighter note, has anyone else noticed that Clementine has adopted a new facial expression? It could just be the BADASS Clementine persona face, but every other shot of her, she's doing THIS:

This is a screenshot of my results from Episode 2:
That's what I like to see; in the minority for 4 out of 5 choices. :)

Took the blame for Sarah's photo: I couldn't have Carlos getting angry with Special Sarah, now could I?

Sat with Luke: Ha yeah, fuck off. Like I was going to sit with that fucking prick. I now correct my statement from the last episode: Nick is my SECOND most hated character in season 2.

Told Walter the truth: He deserved to hear the truth. Besides, I was hoping he'd slit Nick's throat or something equally entertaining.

Let Walter make up his own mind: I just sat back with my fucking popcorn and watched the show here. I was just waiting to see what happened. :)

Stayed to help Carlos: Fuck Kenny, he can get his balls bitten off by a grizzly bear or a pack of walkers for all I care.

Episode 3 is next. :)

The Walking Dead Season 2: My Episode 1 Choices!

----------------------------------------------
Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

So, as some of you might know, the 5th and final episode of The Walking Dead series 2 came out this week. I'd previously purchased the season pass, and laid in wait for almost a year for all of the episodes to come out. There was no way I was going to wait months apart for the next part of the damn story - which is exactly what I did for season 1 as well.

And fuck me, I am so glad I waited - some of these bloody episodes end with mega cliffhangers - I would have smashed my Xbox if I'd finished episode 4 and didn't have episode 5... Holy shit.

Anyway - those of you who followed my choices from season 1 know exactly how I feel about certain characters - particularly those who made a comeback for series 2. As you play as Clementine this time, I chose to make her personality and choices a total BADASS. You may have heard of the Scumbag Lee/Scumbag Clementine videos on YouTube (where someone made the most evil and selfish choices possible for every choice), but I toned some of it down. If I hated a character, I fucking let them know, but I managed to form some friendships and alliances.

I instantly liked Sarah - who my friends and I nicknamed Special Sarah - for obvious reasons... So, I decided to drop some of the BADASS Clementine persona to be nice to her.

I started playing episode 1 around 2PM and finished episode 5 at around 9PM - baring in mind, stopping for food, piss and shower breaks. So, series 2 is shorter than series 1 - and I found it easier, now knowing the gist of things. I also noticed a slight re-vamping of some of the quicktime events - they now include some random control-stick whacking parts.

Anyway, enough bullshit - on with my choices. It goes without saying that there will be MASSIVE SPOILERS.

This is a screenshot of my results from Episode 1:
I noticed that I was in the majority for 3 of 5 choices this time... I can imagine that these stats have a lot less people factoring in - I can assume that more people played season 1 - and can also guess that many people like me decided to wait until all 5 episodes were out to play season 2.

Stopped to help Christa: Well, of course! She'd been with me for like 2 years, she was my "group", technically. Also, she seems to have lost a lot of her major bitch vibes since season 1.

Killed the dog: Sam, you little shit! After I petted you, played frisbee with you AND gave you some of my beans, you chomp the shit out of me? You're lucky I chose to put you out of your misery, I could have left you to die slowly... But after all, I am BADASS Clementine. :)

Did not accept Nick's apology: Fuck you Nick, you are a total COCKHOLE. Instantly, you have become my least favourite character.

Refused water: This fucking guy - he was one of the scavengers who attacked Christa. Yeah, fuck you, like I'm going to share some precious lifeforce with you.

Went with Pete: I don't care if Pete was bitten; there was NO FUCKING WAY I was going with that cockhole across the river.

Stay tuned for episode 2!

A Rant About: Nexuiz

Let me tell you a story.

I once saw a game called Nexuiz for sale on Xbox Live Arcade. It had been reduced to 200 Microsoft Points. I jumped at the chance to get a game so cheap. I didn't realise that Nexuiz is a shitty online sci-fi first-person-shooter that I hated. I'm not the biggest fan of online first-person-shooters, but some can be fun. Nexuiz consists of repetitive environments, bog-standard weaponry, retarded power-ups and frequent level sections that leave you bouncing around in the air from jump platform to jump platform.

I played for an hour and was unfortunate enough to get 15G worth of achievements.
Why unfortunate? Because the publisher, THQ went out of business soon after its release, the game was delisted from Xbox Live Arcade and the online servers were shut down.

With the unfortunate events that have took place for well-known publishers THQ over the past few months, it's unsurprising to see their XBLA title, Nexuiz vanish from the Games Marketplace, especially after the servers for the game just recently felt the wrath of the shutdown-axe, too.

Nexuiz was recently part of a game publisher weekend deal that saw the game reduced from 800 MSP to 200 MSP. Many of you will have probably scooped the title up at the time, but if you didn't get around to starting the game, then the completion won't be coming your way anytime soon. Based around first-person online multiplayer madness, the server shutdown has rendered nine of the 12 achievements unobtainable. With no warning or notice to the servers being switched off, this is just the harsh way the cookie has crumbled for this particular THQ title.

That is the quote provided to explain what happened.

So, if you have Nexuiz on your harddrive and have never played it - well done, you avoided this glitchy, broken and otherwise horrible game. Delete it and free up around 1000MB of space that can be used to store less shitty games.

If you are like me and have a few achievements - get used to the incomplete status. It has forever ruined your achievement completion percentage.

The Walking Dead: My 400 Days DLC Choices!

----------------------------------------------
Episode Selection:

SEASON 1:
----------------------------------------------

Here we are, my last blog in my series of The Walking Dead choices (that is, until TellTale Games bring out the series 2 episodes) - the choices I made during the somewhat unrelated-to-the-main-story DLC episode "400 Days". Like before, there will be massive SPOILERS.

Despite 400 Days not fitting in with the other 5 episodes I'd just finished (I was expecting an epilogue-style episode), I actually quite liked each chapter being about one specific character. I'd say about half of them were twats and the other half were the type of people I personally would like to spend a zombie apocalypse with.

This is a screenshot of my results from 400 Days:
During 400 Days, I found I was in the majority for 1 of the 5 choices, the minority for 3 of the 5 choices and a complete 50/50 result for Wyatt's chapter.

Shot Danny's foot: Danny was a fucking RAPIST. I don't get why I'm in the minority for this choice. People would rather save a rapist than a thief?  Are you people fucking RETARDED? He RAPED A MINOR. He deserves worse than having his foot shot off! I bet the reason I'm in the minority here is that the camera started out by pointing at Justin and you twats were too lazy to move your control stick!

Stayed in the car: I needed to win Rock-Paper-Scissors for the achievement. It amuses me that the choice here is a straight 50/50 - that means half of the Xbox 360 players don't have the achievement. :P

Left Nate: Yeah, like I was going to kill old people for no reason. What a tosser.

Honest with Leland: You've probably noticed a trend with the honesty stuff. Besides, it was an accident, give people some goddamn slack.

Killed Stephanie: I went with what Becca wanted. I didn't want to risk getting killed by escaping.

After I got the results for the standard 5 choices, I also found out who stayed at the camp and who went to the refuge: Only Russell stayed at the camp - Fuck knows why. He was my least favourite of the 5 anyway, I hope he gets eaten alive. What, so you stay at a camp and get eaten because I wouldn't let you shoot some old people? Prick hole.
